3:30 Hanna Update
Posted: (September 06, 2008 03:30 pm)

Rain is continuing to fall over the region.  The heavy rain area has expanded into the Philly area and New Jersey, so those places had some heavy rain the past few hours and they are contining to have some heavy rain.  Very heavy rain has been falling in the Susquehanna and Lehigh vallies.  Infact flood advisories had been in effect the past few hours, because of some very heavy rainfall.I would say a good 1.5 to 3 inches has fallen in these places. A lot of the advisories have now been dropped. It appears that the rainfall rates have slowed down some in the past hour or so.If you look at the radar the area of heavy rain that has been over the susquehanna is appearing to be weakening some.

Change Region:
That is probably because of a dry slot that is starting to work in.  If you look, the back edge of the rain is now moving eastward.  If you look at the bottom of the rador, you can see the back edge of Hanna.  Hanna is now moving to the NE rather than NNE. I expect the rain to continue in the susquehanna valley/South Central Pa through 6:30. Don't be fooled by the weakening of the heavy rain area. Some heavy rain will still fall. The steady rain could taper off to just scattered showers by 7 or 7:30.  Places from Berks county on east into New Jersey should see the steady rain last through at least 8:30.  I think the highest rainfall totals should be in South central PA/the susquehanna valley and the lehigh valley, because that is where the heaviest rain has been all day.  I think the totals in these places will range from 2.5 to mabey 5" in some spots.  Places further south and east like Philly, Jersey, and Delaware should see totals range from 1.5 to mabey 3" in some spots.  The storm has been further west than expected, so that is the reason for the lesser amounts in these places.

The wind has also picked up during the past few hours. Winds have gusted over 30 MPH in south Jersey and Deleware. The winds should continue through the evening until the center of Hanna moves away from the region.  That is how things are looking now.  I will have another update around 6:30 or 7.
