RECORD WARM SUMMER COMING TO AN END
Posted: (August 06, 2008 09:47 pm)

As summer begins to wind down and we move away from the hottest part of the year we can look back on what has been one of the hotter summers on record throughout the area.  Aside from a week or two of cloudy unsettled weather the summer was realtively dry and hot, from beginning to end.  The early heatwave in June kicked off what many outlets are saying will be the one of the hotter summers on record, and many areas posted a top 5 record for the month of July, including many Jersey shore communities such as Atlantic City.  I believe the average temp for July in Atlantic City was above 73 degrees which would make it the third or fourth hottest July on record.  I know here in the Lehigh Valley my grass burned out before the fourth of July and just made a come back after last weeks showery weather.  Being a sun and heat lover, this was one of the better summers I can remember since the late 90s where we finally had 90+ degree temps for more than just 1 or 2 days in a row, in fact we had more than 3 heat waves.  As I look ahead and see no days above 90 in the forecast I realize summer is ending and now can't wait for those cool nights and falling leaves with college football.

Record warmth?
Posted: (August 08, 2008 07:23 am)

I haven't actually investigated the data, but it hasn't seemed tall that much hotter than normal this summer. Actually, last summer seemed hotter. This summer has been a little wetter than 2007, but still below normal. It's very interesting to me that New England has had much more thunderstorm activity (including severe weather) than the Delaware Velley. I like this current weather pattern, but I much prefer there to be more rain! I hope we don't go through the same situation as last year with dry conditions right through October. Although, I did enjoy the warmest ever October in 2007, it gave me a chance to get to the beach for the first time all year. The ocean water temp. last October was in the 70s and the air temp was in the 90s for 3 days!! I am now shaking my rain stick.....come on stroms!!!

As of Today

We have reached 20 days of 90+ heat in Philadelphia. In a normal year in Philadelphia we see 24 days of 90+ heat in a year. Now all of this not taking into account night time or average temperatures because there have been plenty of days very close to 90 and it could have easily reached 90 too. Kevin
