Hurricane Floyd
Hurricane Floyd struck the Bahamas when it was at peak strength on September 14, 1999. Floyd was the sixth storm in the 1999 Atlantic hurricane season. Its highest wind speed was 155 mph, and was rated a Category 4. Floyd triggered the second largest evacuation in US history, a total of 2.6 million people from five states were ordered from their homes. The hurricane caused over $6 billion in damages and up to 87 fatalities due to freshwater flooding from eastern North Carolina. The video shows Floyd in action, blowing fiercely, almost uprooting trees and tearing off a building's roof. Floyd's impact was so great that 6 months after the storm, child abuse rose because of parental stress due to losses in the storm.
