Hurricane Bertha
This video shows the development of Hurricane Bertha and the damage it caused. Bertha was a tropical cyclone formed during the 1996 Atlantic hurricane season, and it preceded the much more destructive Hurricane Fran. Bertha had sustained winds of 115 mph and caused only 12 deaths, but despite its relative weakness to its successor, Fran, the damage was still quite extensive, costing a total of $355 million. Like Fran, it also made landfall in the North Carolina area and caused the most damage there. This video also shows how scientists predict hurricanes. As the clip shows, forecasting hurricanes puts a lot of pressure on the scientists because not only are there so many possible paths that the hurricane might take, people's lives are also at stake. If they make the wrong prediction, it would be a much larger disaster. Thankfully, weather forecasts are accurate most of the time.
