Hurricane Opal
Hurricane Opal was a weather disturbance that formed in the Gulf of Mexico in 1995. It caused the most damage in Florida, in the Florida Panhandle, thanks to a storm surge of about 15 feet. Opal had maximum sustained winds of 240km/h. Because of the floods, as many as 69 people died and about $5 billion in damages. Hurricane Opal's destructive path passed through several regions--Guatemala, Mexico, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The region with the most fatalities was Guatemala at 39 deaths. This footage was taken on October 4, 1995, a week after Hurricane Opal first formed. The day before, Opal's strength was near that of a Category-5 hurricane, but thankfully it gradually weakened after making the landfall in the Western Florida Panhandle.
