Hurricane Ivan Tornadoes at Dulles Airport
Hurricane Ivan reportedly produced up to four tornadoes as it moved across Loudoun County on September 17, 2004. It caused damage to several homes and set fire at Leesburg Executive Airport. The four tornadoes affected the areas of Hughesvile, Lovettsville, Hamilton, and Dulles. At the Dulles Airport, where the first tornado came at 6:11 pm, flights were delayed because the tornado was so close to them, the staff could see it just outside their windows. There was also widespread power loss and damage, but fortunately there were no fatalities or injuries. At about 8:30 pm the storm seems to have calmed, but the following morning as much as 2.34 inches of rain was recorded.
