Cleo was the first major hurricane of the 1964 season, and was one of the longest-lived. It was compact yet powerful; it killed 217 people and caused about $1.30 billion in damages. The area with the most fatalities was Haiti with 192. Cleo's heaviest rains fell along the coast of the southeast United States, and heavy damage was seen as far as central Florida.
