Hurricane Georges ravages Puerto Rico
Hurricane Georges was the second major hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season. The fearsome weather force killed six hundred and three people, and more than $7 million in damages, mostly over Puerto Rico. Georges was a Category Three with maximum sustained winds of 115mph and gusts between 130-140mph at landfall in Puerto Rico. The minimum central pressure at landfall in Puerto Rico was 968mb (28.59in). Thanks to weather forecasts from local weather authorities, thousands of Puerto Ricans were able to prepare for the hurricane several days prior to its arrival. Georges' rampage affected several regions across the Greater Antilles and the states of Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, causing widespread damage, heavy rainfall, and landslides. The American Red Cross dubbed Georges as the costliest disaster in the history of their organization. Always be prepared for these kinds of weather.
