Severe thunderstorm over Cleveland County, NC on June 24, 2007. You can actually hear the weather report on the radio in the background indicating just exactly how severe this storm was. According to the weather radar, this storm was a mesocyclone. Mesocyclones are a vortex of air connected to a storm, and are usually associated with extremely severe thunderstorms. They are also an important ingredient in the formation of one of the most violent forces of nature: Tornadoes. It wasn't clear whether there were tornadoes during this storm though.
