Midwest/ Central Plains - Severe Weather UPDATE
Posted: (July 02, 2008 01:43 pm)

As anticipated heavy thunderstorms are already developing out ahead of the cold front stretching from southern Michigan to the Central Plains States. Two ongoing complexes are currently moving through the Midwest. The first one has prompted a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH across southern Michigan, southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois until 4:00pm CDT. The main threat with this complex is for damaging wind gusts possibly reaching a whopping 80 mph in some cases. There could also be some large hail associated with this as well.

The second complex is currently moving through northern Missouri where the atmosphere is most primed for severe weather this afternoon/ evening. As of right now there is not a watch in effect. However, these storms will continue to rapidly intensify with the strong heating of the day. Damaging winds, hail and drenching downpours will be the main threats later this afternoon.

Dynamically everything will be coming together as the day wears on. A strengthening low level jet, strong instability and plenty of moisture. Thunderstorms that are in clusters right now should begin to stretch out into a squall line by this evening. This line, according to the latest guidence looks most severe across central Missouri, extreme eastern Kansas and western Illinois. Supercells will form along the front bringing an increase in the possibility of large hail and even an isolated tornado.
