October will bring a variety of weather in New England to Virginia. I do expect another tropical system but this will more than likely be in the Gulf of Mexico not along the East Coast. Frost and even a freeze has already taken place in New England and parts of New York this season. I expect that frost to run as far south as the Lehigh Valley and even the far burbs of New York City and Philadelphia. No real snow this month expect a weak lake effect event east of Lake Ontario in New York State.
My outlook for October Breaksdown like this.....
OCT 1-7 NEAR NORMAL TEMPS, BELOW NORMAL PRECIP
OCT 8-15 ABOVE NORMAL TEMPS, BELOW NORMAL PRECIP
OCT 16-23 BELOW NORMAL TEMPS, ABOVE NORMAL PRECIP
OCT 24-31 NEAR NORMAL TEMPS, NORMAL PRECIP
HIGHLIGHTS OF OCTOBER....
Frost/Freeze late month in Lehigh Valley to Lower Hudson
Tropical system in the Gulf but not higher than a CAT 2
Wet SNOW / Rain off the Tug Hill Plateau north of Syracuse (Lake Effect Stuff)

Frost (Again) in Townsend, DE
Posted: (October 08, 2008 03:06 pm)
Yes, I'm in an area that is between Blackbird State Forest and Millington Wildlife Management Area, both of which are large tracts of woods, as you probably already know. The temp this morning got down to 36.9 at my house and we had frost again. On Monday evening, driving home, when I left route 13 southbound at Pine Tree corners, the temp on the car was 63 degrees. The temp was 55 ten mins and 8 miles later when I pulled into my driveway. Yesterday, the temp was 52 degrees at my house at the same time (6 p.m.). It is often much cooler at my house than most of the area, presumably owing to the large wooded areas and ag fields nearby and their impact on radional cooling. That's a good argument for planting more trees to reduce global warming I'd think.

Frost in Townsend??
Posted: (October 07, 2008 12:17 pm)
I am on the other side, in Odessa. We didn't get cold enough for that. I have an outdoor thermometer and reset the stats last night so I could see how cold it got. The low registered as 41'ish. Since Townsend is now a large area and not specific to the town itself, are you in the far-spread-out lots of farms, near Maryland? I can see that area having significantly colder spots with calm weather like last night.
Frost This Morning - Delaware

Rob we had frost this morning in Townsend, Delaware. This is about on par with our first frost last year (first week in October). This doesn't mesh with your highlights above of a frost/freeze late month in Lehigh. How about a frost early month in Delaware! :) I'm in a very rural part of DE, that's why its so cold, I know.
Winter 1979-80, No Snow Zone..

Snow Devil I do not recall that April Event, but here at the Shore it rarely snows in April, so I do not doubt you're April Slush Memory, I think I'm a little high for Philly's totals that Winter, if you or Rob can get the Totals I would love to find out. I am certain the Winter of 1979-80 was snowless for me at the coast, December 79' right before Christmas I did get 6". But not much after that..Also if I remember correctly Christmas Day was very warm in 79'.
Winter 79-80

Yanks, I think you're right on with what that winter held in store. I remember it being very cold (the tail end of what some considered the Little Ice Age of the mid to late 70's) and not all that snowy. I do remember late season snow though and 1 particular event in April that dumped maybe 6" of slush.

I remember that, I was 14 riding the school bus going to my high school. It snowed all morning enough to cover the grass .
Already Rob..

Thursday the wind was producing Lake effect Rain Showers with this latest Upper Level Low or was it a Piece of Energy.. So this could pan out like you mentioned. Also this could be a Bell Weather Indicator for an Early Winter Season. This Area has been Trending Cooler and shows no real signs of reversing.
Hey Snow Dev..

If I remember that snow event Correctly, It was a System that transitioned from a rain event to a period of snow at the tail end . I even got a coating to an inch here at the coast. I was in 6th grade. The bad news with this was we did not get alot of snow that Season 1979-80 Winter, it Resembled this past Winter. That Winter was cold but lacked big Snow Events.. Storms kept Dodging our Region all Winter - that's my recollection at least here at the coast.. I think Philly had an avg. total 19", but the storms that missed us would have Blasted us.. I'm not definite with the Philly Totals. Correct me If I'm wrong..These totals include December 79'.
It has snowed in Late October even in Syracuse

When I lived in Syracuse I took my kids out for trick or treat in 1-2" of wet snow in Syracuse so yeah it can snow in October. All you need is 26 degree difference in the lower atmosphere(5,500 feet) and lake temps to get the lake machine. Lake snow off the eastern end of Lake Ontario in Late October is not all that rare. I think Oct 27-31 is the area of lake snow off Ontario. 19 at 5,500 feet and 45 degree Lake Ontario water will do it. Yeah you do need a real cold air mass and I see this in the end of the month. ----
East coast snow?
Posted: (October 03, 2008 10:34 pm)
It snowed in the Delaware Valley on Oct. 10th (2"-3") on Oct. 10th, 1979? It can snow in October and on the Tug Hill plateau, it is not nearly as uncommon. Just 2 years ago I was in Pittsburg on the 22nd and witnessed a snow thunderstorm in the afternoon and afterwards the temps never got out of the 30's. Snow in NW Pa and NW NY is somewhat common in late October IMO.
Lake effect stuff

It would have to be a strong cold front to produce lake effect snow even on the plateau. What time frame are you talking about 10 - 16 to 10 - 23 . That sounds a little early for me, snow on the East coast before holloween.
