Green Summer Reading List for Kids
Posted: (June 16, 2008 01:44 pm)

Reading is a great way to pass the time during the hot and humid summer months.  Here are a few of my favorites that will help teach your children the importance of EVERYONE doing their part.

Recycling is an easy way to  protect our natural resources. Recycle! A Handbook for Kids by Gail Gibbons explains the importance of recycling and what it does for the environment. It’s geared toward children ages 4 to 8.

Where Does the Garbage Go? By Paul Showers follows garbage from your trashcan to the landfill, the incinerator and the recycling center. This book takes children on a journey that will ultimately reveal the importance of “reduce, reuse, recycle.” This book is for children ages 6 to 9.

Julie and the Eagles by Megan McDonald and Robert Hunt  is for the American Girl doll Fan. It’s a story of two girls who try to save bald eagles. This book is a great one to couple with a trip to the Carolina Raptor Center.

And last but not least,  The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is a great book about conserving precious and finite natural resources.  There is also a fun interactive website where children can play games while learning what they can do to make a difference in the environment around them.  You can visit it at TheLoraxProject.com

All of these books offer great lessons...and as the Lorax says "unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to better, it’s not".

So have your children curl up with a good book this summer.  It’ll pass the time and they’ll be learning why each one of us must do our part to protect the planet.
