GAME #3 (SAT) WORLD SERIES GAME LOOKS TO BE A WASHOUT
Posted: (October 22, 2008 03:29 pm)

The more I look at the models and the way they are trending I think this game may get rained out.  Now if this was a regular season they might wait this out but this is the World Series.  Look what is on the line when it rains.

--- Safety of players on wet field, this brings injury & missed plays, esp. in the outfield

--- TV Ratings.  Delay the game past prime time & who will be watching outside TB/Philly. FOX is all about the ratings, esp with Philly market so big.

--- Since this is the last round they can delay it a day.  The World Series a day later is not a big deal and Sunday/Monday look ok.

--- You have Game 6 & 7 if needed in the dome in Tampa, so this would be the only possibe game cancelled.  I think they will decide by 2-5pm on Sat.

--- If you cancel Saturday you know have Game 6 & 7 on Thursday/Friday. Those are better sports viewing nights anyway for better TV ratings.

The big two US based models both play rain, it's not heavy but could be presistant enough to cause the game to be re-scheduled.  CMC(Candian) model is the lightest with the rain and the US based Navy NOGAPS the heaviest.  The GFS and NAM, which are very good within 48 hours (Thursday 8pm) will start to become more precise.  Both now are just about eveb with .36" to .38" of rain during the game.

Yeah we could see light rain all game but since this is the "World Series" they will probaly not take a chance.

Not So Sure...

In 1977 the PHillies and Dodgers played an NLCS game in steady rain. I just think that for this game to be a washout, we would need an absolute TON of rain. "Safety of the players" wouldn't be a huge issue. Between every half inning the grounds crew would add dirt to the infield, and the outfield drains surprisingly well at CBP. In regards to TV ratings, Fox would much rather have a Saturday night game as compared to a Tuesday night. And, don't forget, the start time in the West Coast is 5 PM. So if you're worried about people watching, even if the game started at 10 PM here, its still 7 PM on the West Coast. Not saying the game 100% wont be rained out, but .38 inches of rain(which would be light rain) simply isn't enough in my opinion.
