Northeast Kingdom Precipitation Recap for April 2008
Posted: (May 01, 2008 03:31 am)

The month of April 2008 was full of surprises as we had a 7-day stretch of temperatures above 70 degrees, heavy rainfall, and minor flooding in Caledonia County. The heavy rainfall and minor flooding occurred a few days before the end of the month. Saint Johnsbury, VT received 2.55 inches of rainfall as the storm caused minor flooding on routes 5, 114, 122 in Vermont and also Route 302 in Wells River, NH. The east branch of the Passumpsic river crested at 6.74 ft. on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 5:00pm. By 8pm, the water levels fell back to Action stage. The rising water levels resulted in minor flooding to poor drainage areas, low-lying fields, trailer park homes, and the roadways. Check out Steve LaVoie's blog from yesterday, as he shot some great pictures of the minor flooding near Stevens Loop at the intersection of Routes 5 and 114 in Lyndonville, VT just about an hour or two before my 5:30pm show on News 7.

As for total precipitation for the month of April, Saint Johnsbury, VT checked in at 4.43 inches, which is 1.7 inches wetter than the climatological average of 2.74 inches. Last April was also wetter than the average with a total of 3.74 inches.

The wet weather and warm temperatures from April should help vegetation as Early May is the time to plant peas and Potatoes in the North Country. In the next few weeks, we should start to see growing grass, plenty of leaves on the trees, and beautiful flowers.
